Which Side Does the Tassel Go On for Graduation Photos?

If you’ve ever held a graduation cap and thought, “Wait… which side is this thing supposed to go on?” you’re not alone.

Here’s the simple answer:

👉 Before graduation: right side (the tassel is on the side of the grads right ear)
👉 After graduation: left side

That little flip during the ceremony is a tradition that marks the moment you officially graduate. You go from student to graduate in one quick move. For most photos taken before the ceremony, the tassel typically starts on the right. That said, it truly doesn’t matter. I, for one, think it’s nice to have the tassel on the left as though you have already graduated. The bottom line: don’t sweat it, because nobody has ever noticed when I got it wrong. Take some on each side if it makes you happy! 😄
